An eventually consistent system generally makes a tradeoff of between speed and accuracy. A great example of this is the like counter on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Users generally won't mind that the like count on a post is off by a few hundred likes, so there's no reason to wait for all of the counted likes to synchronize across all of the databases. It's much better to load the post as fast as possible, show a potentially inaccurate number, and keep the user engaged and scrolling.
The same principle should apply to how you structure your own life. But instead, we're taught the opposite. You always hear about how important balance is in everything you do: work, diet, exercise, social engagement. Especially if you're someone who's keen on personal growth and self improvement, this is probably a common thread you've seen shared across almost every philosophy, culture, and way of life. We're constantly told that we'll achieve our dreams only if we strive for balance in everything we do. I find this to be a fundamental flaw in most people's mindsets.
Let's consider a system where balance is treated as an eventual consistency problem instead of an immediate one. Much like distributed systems, we can accept temporary imbalances in our lives for the sake of progress and efficiency. There will be times when work demands more attention, when fitness takes precedence, or when family needs become paramount. The key is understanding that these imbalances are not just acceptable but often necessary for meaningful achievement.
Think about any significant accomplishment in history. Did Thomas Edison maintain perfect work-life balance while inventing the light bulb? Did Olympic athletes maintain a balanced social life during their peak training years? Did startup founders achieve their breakthroughs while carefully monitoring their screen time? The answer is almost certainly no. They understood, perhaps intuitively, that balance is something that emerges over time, not something that must be maintained at every moment.
This isn't a license to completely neglect important aspects of your life indefinitely. Rather, it's permission to temporarily prioritize what matters most right now, with the understanding that you'll eventually course-correct. Just as distributed systems eventually sync their data, you'll eventually bring other areas of your life back into focus when the time is right.
The beauty of viewing balance as an eventual consistency problem is that it unlocks what you're actually capable of. You stop wasting energy on the impossible task of perfect equilibrium and start directing it toward what matters most. This is the unspoken secret of everyone who's achieved something meaningful—they didn't balance; they committed, intensely and temporarily, to what mattered most. And then they moved on to the next thing. This framework doesn't just free you from guilt about temporary imbalance; it gives you permission to pursue excellence. And that's the only thing that's ever changed anything.
